10 Ways to use Chutney

Curious about chutney, but not sure exactly what to do with it? We’ve put together a little list of our favourite ways to use chutney. But first, what exactly is chutney?

Originating in India, chutney is a condiment made from almost any combination of vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices, and varies greatly from region to region. Typical Indian chutneys are made with ingredients like coconut, mint, and yogurt, and are usually served along side curries. Westernized chutneys are predominantly made from fruit and spices like cloves and ginger, and simmered with vinegar and sugar to create a sweet and sour condiment similar to a relish or a jam. 

10 Ways To Use Chutney

Our fridge usually has at least one jar of chutney in it at all times and we’re always finding new ways to use it. Here are some of our favourites:

1. Go traditional – Serve a spoonful along side your favourite indian curry.

2. As part of a cheese plate – Tart, zesty chutneys pair well with creamy cheeses. Try serving some on your next cheese board, or pour over top of a wheel of brie and bake it the oven till just turning gooey. 

3. As a glaze for roast meats – Try our Apple Chutney with a roasted pork tenderloin, or our Plum Chutney to glaze duck breasts.

4. As a sandwich spread – On it’s own or mixed with a bit of mayo, chutney gives your sandwiches a little boost. Try Cranberry Chutney on a turkey sandwich or Garlic Chutney with roast beef.  How about on a grilled cheese? Apple or peach chutney with some melted manchego or brie is delicious.

5. As a snack – Stir a bit of chutney into your plain yogurt for a little mid-day pick-me-up.

6. As a dipping sauce – Combine 1 tablespoon of Plum Chutney with 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon mirin or other sweet white wine, and 1 teaspoon of fish sauce. Serve with spring rolls, pot stickers or tempura.

7. As a filling for empanadas, or hand pies – Mix some chutney with  ground meet or cheese and wrap inside puff pastry. Try our Sausage and Apple Chutney Pies.

8. As a dressing – Thin chutney with a little vinegar and oil to create your own salad dressing. We love it in this Apple Bacon Slaw, fantastic on it’s own or to top pulled pork sandwiches.

9. Jazz up your rice – Add some chutney to your rice and fry a bit for a delicious pilaf.

10. In a savory tart – Roll out some puff pastry and top with chutney and fresh goat cheese, bake until flakey and crisp.
